Number Cells

The number of cells, \(N_\text{R cells,central}\), \(N_\text{T-Cells,peripheral}\), etc., are the number of cells identified by the subscripts. Cells express receptors or membrane-bound ligands on their cell surfaces.

The number of cells are used to calculate receptor burden in the case that receptor steady state is provided in units of receptors per cell. They also control the 2D volume of the membrane compartment, in which membrane-bound species interact.

Identifying Values

The number of cells is determined by identifying the size of the cell population that expresses the relevant membrane proteins. This is typically performed in the course of a target burden calculation. See the detailed examples in Receptor Concentration for guidance on how to set this parameter.
